Disposal for Intuitive Use

Design explorations aimed to craft a receptacle that seamlessly integrates into everyday habits while elevating functionality. Guided by research insights, the focus was on replicating the familiar act of discarding a cup in traditional trash bins, creating a solution that feels intuitive yet transformative.Design explorations aimed to craft a receptacle that seamlessly integrates into everyday habits while elevating functionality. Final Concept

The final bin concept was designed to align with the heuristic decision-making process used in everyday actions, such as discarding an item. To facilitate intuitive use, the bin retains a form resembling a traditional garbage bin, aiding quick recognition and decision-making.

How it works

The low tech receptacle concept works similar to a conventional bin.

It features an opening style preferred by users during testing and incorporates an aperture that will only open with compatible cups embedded with RFID chips. This system ensures proper disposal of foreign objects and prevents theft of reusable cups, creating a secure and efficient design.

Prototyping

The prototyping process involved precise fabrication techniques to bring the bin concept to life. Medium-density foam was CNC-machined to create the mold plug for vacuum forming. Polystyrene plastic was vacuum-formed over the mold, producing a lightweight, hollow bin top. The plastic was then trimmed, sanded, and painted, with final messaging decals applied, ready for user testing.
