Immersive Reuse at Starland Yard

The bins were tested at Starland Yard, a popular food truck park in Savannah, GA, integral to the city’s culture. Testing took place on Memorial Day weekend in 2024. The goal was to mimic an open-loop system that would become a part of Savannah's evolving culture around cup usage.

Testing
Day
The testing occurred over two days: the first focused on evaluating the effectiveness of a no-tech solution, while the second day tested a low-tech version of the bin.
No Tech
On the first day, a no-tech bin was tested with a smaller opening to indicate its purpose exclusively for cups. Participants were informed to return cups only to this bin. However, some disposable cups and additional trash were mistakenly disposed of, highlighting challenges with clarity and access.
Observations included 22 unintended disposable cups in the bin.
Thus, RFID technology was deemed effective in reducing improper disposal, offering a scalable and cost-efficient solution.

Low Tech
The low-tech bin, with its secure chip-activated opening, reduced trash contamination and ensured cleaner cup returns. Participants valued the chance to help the planet and found the 15% discount rewarding. Bartender support fostered trust, and the system's design encouraged enthusiasm, making it a positive and engaging experience for all.
Impact
In just a few hours on one day, we made a significant impact. Imagine the difference if this initiative were scaled and embraced by all of Savannah. The potential for positive change would be immense.
140 cups
The process began with cups being reused through the system.
121 cups
Fewer cups were returned by the end of the day due to losses and damage.
720 cups
In 6 hours on the second day, 720 cups were diverted from the landfill.
